How to read the week
Moon phases. The four main phases appear with their time in Central European Time: new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter. The days in between carry the name of the stretch the Moon is in. The same engine as the Ártala app calculates the moments, using the formulas of Jean Meeus.[1] A new moon, full moon or quarter falls on the same instant everywhere on Earth; only the clock time changes with the time zone.
Lunar month. The Germanic lunar calendar begins each month with the first visible crescent after the new moon, and its great festivals fall on the full moon.[2] The page calculates for a reference point in central Germany (50° N, 10° E). Further south and south-east the crescent often appears earlier, in Vienna by up to two evenings.[3] That is why the table gives no day within the month. The two days before the month begins and the day itself appear as a change of month.
Festivals. Below the table you find the next full moon and the next festival. The festivals follow the app's festival calendar. The Winter Nights, Yule and the Twelve Nights each have their own article with sources.
